In the middle of the night, on March 17, Jonathan Anderson officially said goodbye to Loewe – with an Instagram post that marked the end of an era. For eleven years, he shaped the Spanish fashion house, combining tradition with artistic experimentation and redefining the boundaries of luxury.
Loewe was founded in 1846 as a small leather workshop in Madrid and developed over the decades into a symbol of Spanish craftsmanship – even becoming the official supplier to the royal family. But when Anderson took over the creative direction in 2013, the label was at a turning point. He did not simply modernize it, but rebuilt it from the ground up. His avant-garde aesthetic merged fashion, art and conceptual design and turned Loewe into a center of creative radicalism.
Radicalism? How?
Under his leadership, bold silhouettes, innovative materials, and surrealist elements were introduced that not only preserved the brand's heritage but also revolutionized it. Highlights include the Pixel Coat from 2022, which created a stir, sandals with heels shaped like balloons, eggs, or roses, and iconic accessories like the Puzzle Bag, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.
With his departure, Anderson leaves behind not only a revitalized fashion house, but also a brand that today stands for the perfect combination of tradition and creative avant-garde.
And what's next?
There has been speculation for months – and one specific scenario seems particularly likely: Jonathan Anderson's next stop could be Dior. After Kim Jones stepped down as creative director of Dior menswear in January 2025 after seven years, the position is now vacant. Maria Grazia Chiuri remains responsible for the women's collections – or is she thinking about a change herself?
The answer is likely to come soon. After Demna Gvasalia's surprising appointment as the new creative director at Gucci, the fashion world is now eagerly awaiting the next big announcement: Where is Jonathan Anderson headed next?
